Queen & Slim is an upcoming 2019 American romantic thriller film directed by Melina Matsoukas (in her feature directorial debut) and with a screenplay by Lena Waithe from a story by Waithe and James Frey.
The film stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith, with Chloë Sevigny, Flea, Bokeem Woodbine and Indya Moore in supporting roles. The film is described as a modern day take on the Bonnie & Clyde trope.
During June 23’s BET Awards ceremony, screenwriter Lena Waithe took the stage to officially reveal the first glimpse of her anticipated new film, Queen & Slim, which she wrote based off inspiration from an original idea by writer James Frey.
A couple’s first date takes an unexpected turn when a police officer pulls them over.
Bringing this film to life was challenging. It was a story I knew was necessary to tell. It’s a story of resistance and a story in which we are never victims and most importantly, a story about the strength of Black love. We set out to create a film that shows our unity as Black people our love is our greatest weapon against oppression. It’s our power, she said.
On 19th July 2018, it was announced that the production company Makeready won a bidding war to co-finance the dramatic thriller film Queen & Slim, scripted by Lena Waithe from an original idea by James Frey, which would star Daniel Kaluuya and be directed by Melina Matsoukas. In November 2018, Jodie Turner-Smith was cast to costar opposite Kaluuya. In March 2019, Chloë Sevigny joined the cast of the film.
Queen & Slim will have its world premiere at AFI Fest on 14th November 2019. This movie to be released in North America on 27th NOV 2019 by Universal Pictures and in UK cinemas on January, 2020.
