A Hidden Life (formerly titled Radegund) is a 2019 historical film written and directed by Terrence Malick, starring August Diehl, Valerie Pachner with both Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz in their final performances. A Hidden Life film depicts the life of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer and devout Catholic who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II.
Premiering in competition, Terrence Malick’s latest film tells the true story of Franz Jagerstatter, an Austrian conscientious objector during World War II.Since Terrence Malick won the Palme d’Or at Cannes eight years ago for The Tree of Life, he has, after a fashion, run the count to two strikes and a foul ball with To the Wonder, Knight of Cups and Song to Song.
Well, it’s a big swing and a miss for strike three with A Hidden Life, which sees the massively talented but often mystifying writer-director take on true-life material for the first time in this desperately indulgent and puzzlingly de-theologized study of an Austrian man who paid the ultimate price for his conscientious objector stance against the Nazis during World War II.This Movie will be theatrically released on 13 December 2019 in the United States.
On June 23, 2016, reports emerged that A Hidden Life (initially titled Radegund) would depict the life of Austria’s Franz Jägerstätter, a conscientious objector during World War II who was put to death at the age of 36 for undermining military actions, and was later declared a martyr and beatified by the Catholic Church. It was announced that August Diehl was set to play Jägerstätter and Valerie Pachner to play his wife, Franziska Jägerstätter.
