Danai Jekesai Gurira is an American playwright and actress.
She was born on born February 14, 1978, in Grinnell, Iowa. Her mother Josephine Gurira, was a college librarian while Roger Gurira, her father, was a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at Grinnell College.
Her parents immigrated from Zimbabwe ( which was then called Southern Rhodesia) to the United States in 1964.
Gurira is the youngest of her siblings: her brother Tare, who is a chiropractor and two sisters, Choni and Shingai. Gurira’s family lived in Grinnell until December 1983 when they moved to Zimbabwe’s capital Harare after their country gained independence. At that time Gurira’s age was 5.
Gurira attended Dominican Convent High School and returned to the United States afterward to study. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Gurira also got a Master’s degree in Fine Arts in Acting from Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.
She starred in the famous TV series Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
To utilize her acting skills, Gurira also began writing plays. She has been commissioned by Center Theatre Group, Playwrights Horizons, Yale Repertory Theatre, and the Royal Court as a playwright.
Gurira debuted her acting career on Broadway in August 2009 in play Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.
She also co-starred and co-wrote with Nikkole Salter, In the Continuum which was played first at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and later Off-Broadway. Gurira won Obie Award, a Helen Hayes Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Lead Actress for this play.
Gurira debuted her film career in The Visitor, a drama film in 2007. She also starred in the films Ghost Town (2008), 3 Backyards (2010). She is also the part of 2020’s new movie Godzilla vs Kong.
