Alexander Johan Hjalmar Skarsgård is a Swedish actor.
Alexander Skarsgård was born on August 25, 1976, in Stockholm, Sweden. Skarsgård is the son of a famous Swedish actor, Stellan Skarsgård. He is the eldest one among his siblings, of which Bill Skarsgård, Valter Skarsgård, and Gustaf Skarsgård are also actors. His mother My Skarsgård, was a physician and his father Stellan Skarsgård’s first wife.
Alexander Skarsgård’s father was a prominent actor in Europe but had not came to international fame before his appearance in Breaking the Waves (1996).
In spite of being the son of a famous actor, his parents wanted their children to have a and modest upbringing Alexander. They were raised under normal circumstances as possible.
At the age of seven, he started acting on Swedish television and in films. He starred in Swedish film Åke och hans värld in 1989, in the role of Kalle Nubb. His acting continued until at the age of sixteen, Skarsgård decided that acting was not the career for him. He left acting to continue his education but at the age of nineteen instead of continuing his education, he entered military service.
On completion of his national service in 1996, he moved to England and enrolled in Leeds Beckett University and studied for six months but he admits he did not paid attention to studies.
This was the time when he realized he should switch to acting again and joined Marymount Manhattan College to study theatre.
After six months in New York, a romantic relationship pulled him back to Sweden but unfortunately, the relationship was short-lived. In spite of being dishearted, he decided to stay in Sweden and once again started his acting career.
He performed in Swedish drama, films and soon became a prominent part of the Swedish acting landscape. But he wanted to broaden his horizons by working at an international level outside Sweden.
Fortunately, a Los Angeles visit provided him the chance to be part of Ben Stiller’s movie, Zoolander (2001).
After that movie, Skarsgård moved again to Sweden and continued his acting in film and theatre Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Bloody Wedding.
He was the co-writer and co-director of the award-winning short film, Att döda ett barn (2003) (To Kill a Child).
Some of his acting credits include Generation Kill (2008), Iceman, Generation Kill (2008), Eric Northman, and True Blood (2008).
True Blood (2008) was adaptation of Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.
In addition to True Blood (2008), Skarsgård has a number of film projects in the works including the Sci-Fi film Battleship (2012), Melancholia (2011) ( written and directed by Lars von Trier), the remake of Straw Dogs (2011) and The East (2013). He is also part of 2020’s new movie, Godzilla vs Kong.
